The world in 1900

The world in 1900
Many historians ask how the World was in 1900. The answer is quite simple. The world was coming to an end… better to say to the beginning of the end of monstrous political scenery. But was it only political? No. Let’s remember what it was going on during this period. Mainly, there have been both political and ideological metamorphoses among the new men in power during these days. These new ideologies had inevitable consequences; let’s consider some of the political or ideological causes and the social consequences of the period.
On the one hand, it has to be beard in mind that by that time the world was dominated by rulers of Europe. And many of them were related to each other. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and the Tsar Nicholas II of Russia were cousins. And King Edward VII of Great Britain was their uncle.
On the other hand the expansionist idea of the empires have being in a continuous growth. Vast areas of Africa and Asia had been colonized by Europeans. Europeans obtained raw materials for industries from these colonies in exchange of the constructions of schools and railways for the people they ruled. These empires made Europe rich, but also caused the European countries to be suspicious of each other. This let their defenses down in such a sense that there appear many spies working for each ruler so as to know what the other were about to do or not.
All this thirst for more and more power was reinforced by the social class differences. Europe in 1900 was divided by class. The upper class owned the land; the middle class controlled industry or shops and offices; the working class worked in factories or in the fields. They also worked as servants for richer people. Many working-class people lived in dreadful poverty. It is in that time when most children died because they couldn’t resist the dreadful and inhumane working conditions.
“A change, a chance” was the logo of many revolutionaries in the principal cities of Europe. There were many revolutionary groups in Europe who wanted to bring down governments by force. Russian revolutionaries had blown up the tsar Alexander II in 18881, and in 1911 they shot the Russian prime minister. In 1914, a Bosnian revolutionary was to assassinate the son of the Austrian emperor in Sarajevo. This act sparked off the First World War.

Repentance

A phantom on the sky
Was looking down to earth
Then, he decided to descend to a solitary place.
There on the graveyard lie his bones
Now as if they were made of coral
Fragile as the feelings he had in life
His tomb covered by ivies, weeds and forgetfulness.
He lies there after fighting against another man.
It was a duel.
The high prize was a lady, who is, by now,
lying in a warm bed
next to the winner.
“Who cares about you now?”, thought the spirit to himself.
All he did was in vain;
All he knew
He was lying dead
Under the cold stone of that cemetery.

Crusader

The huge cold walls of the fortress
Shadowed the plain.
Inside it, hundreds of servants
Awaited for the master to be released
Hoping that he can return blessed.
In the highest tower, a soldier shouted:
There comes our master, holding legs, arms and blood.
There comes our lord, holding honour, bravery and odour.
Open the gates let him and his fine charger get in
And be prepared to take care of him
If needed.
The main entrance opened
at the steady gallop of the white steed.
The man was lying almost dead at the back of the horse.
Everyone ran to help that porcelain doll sleeping on that animal.
A sword was on his stomach,
a river of blood still flowed through his veins.
The lord opened his eyes and said
“Saladin is about to erase this castle
including your soul and faith”.

The things I like and I lack

Hard coloured in red as if it were blood
Spilt on it on purpose.
A glowing gold cross,
yellow pages, black words,
all written in Latin
and many pictures were the most devastating
features of the imponderable feeling that invaded me
when I first glanced at it.
Some of the carvings were in colours,
many others black and white.
The scent of centuries,
the soft grey dust on the back of the book
all this features summoned a great religious relic book.
Found in an inhospitable place
By someone I really appreciate.
I hope this person can make the best of it.
Now, I address you, my friend, study it and then tell me.
I know you don’t believe in this.
But, at least, try it to find out something
beyond a doctrine.
Do it as a scientist might have done it by researching.
Try once in a while to leave for this time
those books you really love.
I know you can surprise me with something more.

HEAVEN AFTER HELL

SOME TIMES ALONE
SOMETIMES ISOLATED
MY LIFE IS COMPLETLY WASTED.
NO MATTER HOW MANY BOOKS I'VE READ
NO MATTER HOW MANY CHURCHES I'VE STOLEN
THE INQUISITOR IS SITTING THERE,
WATCHING ME BEING TORTURED IN THE OVEN.
THE ROOM IS DARK. THERE IS NO LIGHT IN IT
MY CAPTORS TAKE TO NOWHERE
TO NOWHERE TO NOWHERE
I DON'T KNOW WHERE I AM GOING
WAIT, I SEE SOMETHING.
SOMETHING SHINING THERE
IN THE DISTANCE, IN MY MIND.
YET, I CAN'T DISTINGUISH IT ENOUGH
I CAN'T, I CAN'T SEE IT CLEARLY
IT'S SHINING
IT'S A LIGHT, IT BRIGHTS
IT SPARKS
IT'S AN ANGEL WHO WELCOME ME
IN THE DOORS OF HEAVEN

SOLITUDE

Elizabeth was sitting on a bnch in the park near Solitude lake. She was there alone looking at the few pedestrians passing by. the way they dresses has always caught their attention. They were dressed on bright but ridiculous colours: yellow red, green blue and orange; bright orange. it seemed as i the colours accompanied their gestures and movements. they were funny faces to look at. they were always smiling as if they were forced to do it. Suddenly, she saw a dog at a considerable distance from where she was sitting. It was a black dog. The animal was standing there looking at her. Then, the dog was coming towaards her slowly then more rapidly. Finally, the black dog ran towards her. It stopped in front of her and stayed there staring at her for a while.
then, the dog was not longer a dog, but an elephant which uttered the following words: "What are you looking at, Elizabeth?"
-"I'm watching how people act, move around and talk", said the girl.
The elephant said "Do you enjoy looking at people?"
-"Yes, of course. I like to see how the world moves on".
The elephant, as if he knew her since ages patiently said "Girl, you see the world YOU want to see, not the world you should take part of".
the girl almost angrier and about to brek in tears said "I love MY world. and what's that of being part of something I don't belong to?"
The elephant said: " Do as you wish but do not come later to see me and bother me with your pain".
"I have no pains", said the girl proud of her attitude. Many yellow leaves waved through the air because of the autumn breeze. she winked a bit. The elephant was not there anymore. it vanished away.
It was almost noon and elizabeth continued to be sitting in that bench in the park near solitude lake.
