Myths and legends: the Holy Grail

One of my early fascinations when going to a library is to take an old History book specially those dealing with medieval times and religion. One of the most enigmatic myths is that of the Holy Grail. There many myths associated to this “cup”.
One of them is the one involving the biblical figure of Joseph of Arimathea. Joseph was Jesus’ Uncle and he was the man who took Jesus’ body after the Crucifixion. Joseph had visited Britain years before with Jesus due to his interest in the tin trade.
When Jesus died, Joseph travelled to Britain again. He took the Holy Grail with him. The Holy Grail is supposed to be the cup used by Jesus at the last supper.
Joseph was said to have established the 1st church in England at Glastonbury. It is said that he buried the grail at the foot of Glastonbury Tor, from where a spring of blood gushed forth from the ground. In fact, there is a well known as Chalice well and the water that issues from is reddish. Yet, scientists proved that the color of this water is such since of the high amount of oxide the water has.

Another myth involves the widely known relationship between the Holy Grail and the Templers
The Poor Fellow Soldier of Christ and of the Temple of Salomon was among the most famous Christian Military orders.
Enigmatic, long haired, descendents from the Merovingian, Kings of France who lived around in the area o f the gloomy lands of Rennes le Chateau, use to wear white tunics with a red cross on their shoulders and shields.
At the beginning, they protected pilgrims on the dangerous roads between Jerusalem and Palestine.
Within years, the order grew rapidly in membership and power. Now, once the power over Holy landed was lost by the Christians, the support for the order faded.
Rumors about the Templers’ secret organization and relics created mistrust and were accused of heresy. The king Phillip of France, deeply in debt to the order took advantage of the situation. Most of them were burned at the stake.
One of the objects, they were supposed to own was the Holy Grail.
When the order disintegrated, many of its members flee to Spain, Portugal, America and Argentina. Post-columbine myths suggest the City of the Caesars, in the Patagonia was directly linked to the Templers and the Holy Grail. There is a cavern underwater where stones typical of holy land. These rocks are all carved and red crosses are carved on it. It is said that there is sort of mystical protection at the entrance of the caverns in the sea and nobody can get into it. There have been 30 expeditions since 1997.
